Mutual Admiration of Sportsmanship - RAS

A couple of wonderful stories of Sportsmanship from a St. Charles Basketball Tournament and the Archdiocesan Volleyball Playoffs.

The St. Charles District Chairperson, Chip Brandt, shared an e-mail exchange between Dennis Henderson from St. Joachim and Ann and Greg Gibson of Westgate Christian Academy.  The correspondence was prompted when Dennis drove his 8th grade son home from a tournament basketball game against Westgate.  Dennis complimented his son on keeping his cool and not getting frustrated during the game.  His son replied, "Dad, all the boys on that team seem so nice and polite... it is hard to get mad at them."  Plus he mentioned that when he made a free throw, one of the Westgate players told him "Nice shot".  Dennis has seen Coach Gibson's team in action for the past 4 years.  He has always noticed how positive Greg is with his players, and how the Westgate team and fans always display class and sportsmanship.  So Dennis sent an e-mail to Greg and his Westgate team stating the items mentioned above and asked him to please share that with the players and parents.

In response to the e-mail, Greg not only thanked Dennis and assured him he would pass on those kind words, he also mentioned that it has been a blessing for Westgate to be part of the CYC basketball program.  Greg has always tried to coach his teams to play with dignity and class while promoting their relationship with Jesus Christ.  He concluded by writing, "Please know that your thoughts and feelings are reciprocated to you and your teams and I greatly respect all of the time and efforts that you put into your teams and your parish, they are very blessed and fortunate to have you as well!"

The CYC would like to recognize both Greg Gibson and his Westgate Christian Academy team and Dennis Henderson and his St. Joachim and Ann team for their Random (and constant) Acts of Sportsmanship (RAS).  Both these teams, as Dennis said in his e-mail, "model the behaviors CYC strives for".  Not only that, but it is great that Dennis took time to acknowlege that with his e-mail.  At times it seems coaches, players and fans are quick to complain about problems.  Let's all be just as quick to compliment coaches, players, fans and officials when they are doing good things.  Plus help us recognize those actions by sending an e-mail to buzzswanston@archstl.org so we can share their Random Act of Sportsmanship here on the CYC website.

On Saturday, December 11th at the Meyer Youth Center, the Crusader Boys semifinal volleyball match in the Archdiocesan Championship featured Sacred Heart of Florissant and St. Paul.  Both teams brought large and loud cheering sections.  It was a great 3 game match.  It is was very competitive, both teams having their moments.  Joy and sorrow, happiness and disappointment seemed to cross the net almost as often as the ball did.  In the end, St. Paul prevailed by the scores of 18-25, 25-23 and 15-10.  So they advanced to the Championship match the next day.  In a show of great support for their Sacred Heart team, about 30 students came out of the stands and made a tunnel for their team to pass through.  Then they invited the St. Paul team to run through also, cheering them on the whole way through.  That type of sportsmanship and the great, positive, respectful cheering by the fans, made this match one everyone will remember for a long time to come.  Congratulations to all involved on being recognized for their Random Act of Sportsmanship!!!

Soccer & Volleyball Playoffs Crown Champions

CYC Soccer and Volleyball seasons ended this past month with the Archdiocesan (formerly known as City/County) Playoffs.  Congratulations to all the teams that represented their districts in the playoffs.  We would also like to thank the districts that hosted those playoffs.

November 17th - 21st The Girls and Parochial Boys Soccer Playoffs were held.  Thank you to South County for hosting the games at six different parish fields.

December 1st - 5th The Boys and Parochial Girls Soccer Playoffs were hosted wonderfully by North County at 6 different parish fields.  Hot chocolate and hot coffee were in big demand as some of the games were played in frigid temperatures.  The soccer brackets, champions and runners-up can be seen on this website under Sports - Soccer - Youth Soccer - 2010 Archdiocesan Soccer Championship.

December 4th - 5th Great job by the West County District hosting Girls Volleyball playoffs at Incarnate Word, Ascension and the Meyer Youth Center.

December 9th - 12th The St. Louis City District hosted Boys and Parochial Volleyball playoffs at St. Gabriel, St. Joan of Arc and the Meyer Youth Center.  Thanks for another fine job by the City District.  The volelyball brackets, champions and runners-up can be seen on this website under Sports - Volleyball - Youth Volleyball - 2010 Archdocesan Volleyball Playoff Champions.
