Marcus extends a Helping Hand...twice

During the 4th Quarter of the 6th Grade basketball game between Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and St Norbert, BTC center Marcus Stewart had just scored a put-back bucket.  He started to head back down court when he noticed not one, but two St. Norberts players on the floor.  Neither was getting up very quickly.  The rest of the players had headed down court when Marcus reached down and

extended his hand to help an opponent up.  Then he moved over to the second player.  He checked to make sure he was OK, then helped him to his feet also.  What a great example of good sportsmanship!  Marcus showed everyone in the gym exactly why he deserves to be recognized for his Random Acts of Sportsmanship.  Thank you Marcus!  We hope this leads to others extending a helping hand and practicing Good Sportsmanship.

If you see a Random Act of Sportsmanship by a player, coach, official or fan, please share that with us with an e-mail to buzzswanston@archstl.org

Fans join in Good Sportsmanship!

It isn't often that we recognize the fans for their Random Act of Sportsmanship (RAS), but the following story is a great example of how fans can be great sports!

An interesting situation took place the last Saturday in January during a fourth grade basketball game at Annunciation.  The coach has asked to remain annonymous, so we will refer to the teams as home and visitors.  In the first half, the home team went out to a large lead, in fact the visitors did not score a point in the first half.  In the second half the home team coach sat a few of his best players.  The visitors then scored a number of baskets, and the game was much more competitive.  The wonderful part about the game was how the fans from BOTH teams were cheering when the visitors scored.  In fact, a visiting player hit a 3 point shot with only  a couple of seconds left in the game.  When that happened, every parent in the gym was cheering.  What could have been a disappointing, discouraging game turned into to an uplifting, enjoyable game for everyone involved.

We award our RAS not only to the Home Team coach, but to all the fans present in the gym for that game.  It is a great example of how everyone, not just players and coaches, involved in a sporting event can display sportsmanship.  Fans are part of the whole experience.  We invite every fan to be a positive part of every sporting event they attend.  We also invite fans, players, coaches and officials to report any and all Random Acts of Sportsmanship you witness at CYC games by e-mailing the details to buzzswanston@archstl.org

CYC Fans Cheer for Lady Bills and Ashley Hanlen

CYC fans were almost half of the crowd at the St. Louis University Women's game against George Washington University on Sunday, February 5th.  Although they cheered loud and often, they could not cheer the Lady Bills on to victory.  George Washington prevailed 49-35.  Some of the loudest cheers of the night were for Ashley Hanlen, a Billiken player, who grew up playing CYC basketball at St. Michael's parish in Shrewsbury.  CYC girls were ball girls, they also participated in the Basketball Musical Chairs Contest at halftime, and were chosen to answer trivia questions during a time out.  The outcome of the game did not diminsh the fun the for the kids on CYC Night at St. Louis University.  The CYC thanks St. Louis University for hosting this and the other 4 CYC nights each year at SLU.
