Good Sports Spotted at Richmeyer Baseball Tourney and Basketball Playoffs!

The following individuals are being recognized for their Random Acts of Sportsmanship (RAS).  Not only will these Good Sports be commended on this website, but they will also receive a RAS Certificate to display.

Jake Thomure was the catcher for St. Simon's 7th grade baseball team during a game in South County's Richmeyer Tournament at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.  During the game there was an accidental collision between Jake and Damian Brogan, a St. Stephen's baserunner.  As Damian was on the ground and being attend to by his coach, Jake stayed there to make sure Damian was not hurt.  When Damian got to his feet, Jake asked if he was OK.  When he said, "yes", Jake shook his hand and told him he was glad to hear that.  You could tell Jake was genuinely concerned about Damian's well being.  Glenn Zimmerman, Jake's coach describes Jake as having a positive Christian attitude and a team leader.  Jake, thanks for sharing that attitude with your opponents too!

Vallen Rush is a 7th grade basketball player for Tower Grove Baptist.  Her cadet team recently played in the CYC Archdiocesan Playoffs at Sacred Heart of Florissant.  Both game officials were so impressed by Vallen's sportsmanship, that they sent notes to the CYC Office asking that Vallen be recognized for her Random Act of Sportsmanship.  They said immediately after the game, which her team lost, she went up to each of the officials, looked them in the eye as she shook their hands and said, "Good game, sir, thank you".  Then, she was the first one in line to sincerely congratulate the St. Joseph team and wish them good luck in their next game.  Very impressive Vallen!

Jeff Herman is a basketball official.  He officiated a number of CYC Archdiocesan Playoff games.  Three different people pointed out his positive, sportsmanlike actions during a Crusader Boys game at St. Joseph, Imperial.  Through out the game Jeff was very respectful to the coaches, his other official, and the players.  A few times during the game, you could tell a player was not sure why a call was made.  He would make a brief explanation, so that the player could learn from the situation.  At one point in the game he made a foul call, and turned to give the number to the scorer's table.  The player that fouled had the ball and tossed it toward him, not knowing he turned away.  It hit him in the head.  Instead of being upset or angry, he turned back with a smile and joked with the player.  The player was relieved, and what could have been an escalating situation was a non-situation.  Jeff's repoire with the players, coaches and other game officials is being recognized as a Random Act of Sportsmanship.  (The photo above is NOT Jeff Herman, but another of our fine CYC Officials, Don Bowe.)

We encourage you to contact Buzz Swanston at buzzswanston@archstl.org when you see a Random Act of Sportsmanship.  We hope recognizing these actions, which is what CYC Sports should embody, will inspire all CYC athletes to practice Random Acts of Sportsmanship.

Basketball Spirit Games - No April Fools

The schedule for the Basketball Spirit Games on April 1st had the West County Boys vs the Miami Heat and the South Central Girls vs the Harlem Globetrotters...but that was just for fools.  Instead the games were played on Saturday, April 2nd at 3 West County gyms; Holy Infant, Incarnate Word and St. Monica.  We want to thank Michelle Bess, Dave Stumpf, Doug Schveninger, Dan Siemer and all the rest of the West County Basketball gang that hosted this years games.  There were many compliments from coaches and fans and we are sure the  players enjoyed themselves too.  These players were the first to wear the new Spirit Shirt designs.  Check out the photos to see the design with a more detailed King Louie!!!
