Sun Shines on CYC Track Final

Although rain and storms were predicted by all weather forecasters for Saturday, May 21st, it was a beautiful day for the Track Finals at Bishop DuBourg High School.  The CYC would like to thank Trinity, Chaminade and Bishop DuBourg High Schools for hosting the 3 preliminary meets and the final.

The St. Rose Phillipine Duchesne team finished first, followed by Christ the King and in third was St. Peter of Kirkwood.  Congratulations to those 3 teams and to all of the 2200 boys and girls who participated in CYC track this spring.

CYC Runners come join the Festival of Miles

Once again Big River Running is hosting the Festival of Miles, Wednesday evening, June 1st at St. Louis University High School.  This event is to showcase the sport of running at all ages.  So for all you CYC kids that have competed in the CYC track meet, here is another race you can enter.  Of course you can also enter if you did not compete in the CYC track meet, but just like to run.  The Kid's Healthy Mile is early in the evening, and it is for all ages.  Last year's youngest runner was 6 years old!  There are prizes for each age and gender in the Healthy Kid's Mile race, but even if you aren't the fastest runner, come out and run with other kids who enjoy running.  Then stick around and watch as the older age groups compete.  All the way up to some of the elite runners in the nation.

To register online for the race, simply CLICK HERE.  All runners in the Kid's Mile will receive the tech shirt shown below.  Come join in a Night of Fun in the Run!

3 former CYC Players in Final Four

Three former CYC athletes will be playing in the Final Four of Division 1 Men's Volleyball tournament starting Thursday, May 5th and concluding Saturday May 7th.  Those players, as pictured above from left to right are: Murphy Troy, Kevin Heine and Anthony "Pete" Hock.  Murphy plays for the USC Trojans, while Kevin and Pete are Buckeyes at the Ohio State University.  All three players played high school volleyball at St. Louis University High School.  Murphy played CYC sports at Mary Queen of Peace, Kevin played CYC for St. Margaret of Scotland and Pete played his CYC sports at St. David.

Murphy Troy has just been named the American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Year.  Joseph D'Hippolito wrote an article on Murphy that appeared in the May 5th Post-Dispatch.  In the article he mentions playing at Mary Queen of Peace.  If you would like to read the article, you can click here.

Good Luck to all 3 players and thanks for being role models for all CYC players!

Lindbergh wins 22nd Annual CYC Joe Carenza Memorial Girls Soccer Tournament

The 22nd Annual CYC Joe Carenza Girls High School Tournament had plenty of big saves.  None bigger than those provided by Oakville, Mehlville and CBC high school.  The tournament was originally scheduled to start on Monday, April 25th, with all games being played at the Soccer Park.  However, at 2pm on that Monday, we got a call from the Soccer Park saying they had to pull up their turf fields because the Meramec River was rising!  So we had no fields to play on, and even if we could get grass fields, those were too wet.  Becky Czuppon (with a big assist from Dave Robben), Bob Kern and Mike Bartoni were contacted Tuesday, and made their fields available for the tournament to proceed.  Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!  Not only from the folks at the CYC but from the 9 teams and coaches in the tournament.

Once under way, most games were very competitive, including 3 overtime games, 2 of those were decided by penalty kicks.  In the end, the Lindbergh Flyers defeated Collinsville 3-0 in the championship game.  Oakville took 3rd place over Webster Groves.  On the consolation side, Rosati Kain scored with less than 2 minutes in the final game to tie the score.  Then scored the game winner 1 minute into the first overtime period.  Congratulations to the champions and thank you to all teams that participated and endured rain, last minute changes and rising flood waters.
